Why Wealth isn’t about Money; it’s what money can enable

I was conversing with someone about growing up as ‘Haves’ & ‘Have nots’. Upon reflection, it seems people often confuse money and wealth. It’s essential to understand Money is not Wealth.

The importance of money is reinforced in society and glorified by people chasing status. Material goods and status games are played with money because money can be measured—wealth often cannot.

Wealth is not just about money; it’s about needs and wants. A person with fewer needs may feel wealthy even with little money. They might experience wealth through love, good health, safety, food, and a stress-free life—if those things fulfill them. While money can enable wealth (depending on how it is used), it’s not a prerequisite.

Money can often have a net negative impact over time in some people’s lives. Stress, disputes managing it, hoarding it and greed may often ruin relationships, families, businesses, partners etc. The mental turmoil of managing money can take a toll on your wealth.

“A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness.

Albert Einstein

Which leads me to believe, perhaps, wealth is more abundant in society than we think. It’s a subjective experience, available to anyone who defines it on their own terms.

Maybe that’s why rich often say, "Money can’t buy happiness" ?

I didn’t grasp this nuance for a long time: true wealth, for me, lies in travel, meaningful relationships, joy and humor, good food, riveting conversations, health, peace, generosity, freedom, and love—among other things.

It’s the simple luxuries, like waking up without an alarm clock or stepping out for a sunny stroll in the middle of a workweek, that make me wealthy.
